Drawing on your creativity in Docs

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 6:14 PM

I'm excited to tell you about Insert Drawing, a new feature we've added to Google Docs. Now you can create and insert rich, colorful drawings into documents, presentations and spreadsheets, to illustrate your ideas or just for fun.

It's easy to create drawings using lines, free hand scribbles, text labels and a large choice of shapes that you can move, resize, rotate and adjust. Group, order, align and distribute and other features are available when you select objects you've drawn. You can also customize a range of shape properties, from line widths to fill color, and from arrowheads to font size, and much more. If you change your mind, there is undo and redo. You can collaborate with a friend or colleague on a drawing, or work alone, just as you can in Google Docs today.

The team and technology behind Insert Drawing originally came from the startup Tonic Systems, which Google acquired in 2007. The drawing feature that we've built relies heavily on a relatively new capability in browsers: the ability to render vector graphics. We use the SVG (scalable vector graphics) standard to accomplish this in most browsers and VML (vector markup language) where SVG is not available. Only recently has the performance and ubiquity of such technology enabled us to deliver what we hope is a delightful feature. As browsers continue to improve, we can deliver more and more useful cloud-based functionality.

As with any new feature, we'll be adding new capabilities over time. But even though we have our own to-do list, we'd love to hear about how you think we could improve drawings. You'll find Drawing within the Insert menu, so try it out and tell us what you think in our Help Forum.

Just tried a simple shape insert with text and re-color- very simple and easy. Thanks!

Wow...I like it.

But I don't see my drawings in print preview. Is it still under development?

Can I overlay drawing on top of existing images on the page ? sort of like commenting on the picture kind of thing.

Works great in my personal Google Docs account but won't load our Google Apps for Education account-just loads a blank window. If that can be fixed, I can only imagine what our kids will create together!

It's funny that Chromium (2.0.170.0 (11517)) does not support SVG neither VML

I create a new document, click Insert/Drawing ..

Google show me a blank white box. I can move it around, close it, but nothing to draw with it :D

The collaborating functionality doesn't seem to work for my google for domains account when collaborating with a person with a "usual" gmail account

Very nice feature! I can finally get rid of Microsoft Office now.

hopefully one day we will be able to insert pictures into the google sheets, just like you can with zoho...

Wonderful! Thank you!

Cool, but even better would be to have a separate drawing app and file type as well as having embedded drawings.

No se puede insertar videos. Al guardarlos el html desaparece

Great feature! Like in openoffice draw, i'd like to be able to draw connection-arrows between different objects. This way the boxes stay connected when moved around.

Nice, Thank you for this ! I hope more option in the future ;)

Great feature! I was wondering if you could do something like this: www.balsamiq.com

Wow, awesome, it was extremely easy for me to create some doodles. Way to go Google team. No wonder, this post is ranked #1 in http://www.boilingpage.com that tracks popular pages in twitter.

google is trying hard to bring microsoft down. i dont think that'll ever happen...

I haven't gotten this to work with Google Apps - Standard Edition. I created a drawing with my regular google account fine. I shared that back to my Standard Edition Apps Doc in our domain and only get a placeholder.

Stylesheet of spreadsheets seems not working at the moment... is it a common problem?

Now it works...

Try to insert an arrow, looked okay on screen but export to pdf result with a blank page, no arrow... still beta, I guess. :-)

Dries Van Gils said...

A very cool feature, indeed. I'm definitely going to use that one. There is also still room for improvement:
1. When you print or export a document, the drawing disappaers.
2. It seems impossible to copy a drawing from a document into a presentation.
3. It would be great if you could insert existing pictures in your drawings.

Surf said...

Great, user-friendly, as usual :-)
BUT export does not seem to work... tried in OpenOffice and PDF, drawings do not appeaer....

When will you add connectors (the lines follow the shapes)?

I would LOVE to be able to ALIGN TEXT in the drawing -- and/or have a paragraph feature instead of only one line of text at a time! It's so tedious getting all my lines lined up!

And there still seems to be an export problem. I had a doc with 5 very small drawings. The 5th one would not show up when I exported matter what I did!! I tried DOC and PDF formats. Finally I had to view as a webpage (which DID work with all 5 images) and then print, then scan my prints to get a PDF!!

Harry said...

Excellent. However - when making flowcharts you should be able to link boxes together with lines that 'snap' to corners/anchors. Microsoft Word has this ability.

Can you place the drawing on top of an image somehow? Or import the image into the drawing clipboard so you can draw on it there?

This has existed for many years with tools like mxGraph. Not sure about the comment that browsers have only just caught up, mxGraph has been out for over 3 years...

You should make the svg editor available as its own application within google apps and allow svg to be stored on its own within google docs and not only within another document. So i can draw once and reuse more easily.

Also when creating a pdf from where you edit a drawing it becomes vector graphics within the pdf but when you create a pdf for the document where the drawing is embeded it becomes a bitmap. I realy would like it to become vector then also you have proven it is possible.

Could it be possible to include in the drawing environment some sort of LATEX interpreter?

Thanks for this excellent feature in your fast growing and improving office suite.

I'd like to know whether there is any possibility or functionality of importing drawings from Openoffice Draw into Google docs.

Thanks for your response in advance.

ks said...

love this - but would really like to be able to align text.

haigek said...

You've given us export (yay!), but why not also let us import SVG generated outside Google Docs?

Also, why not just let us embed SVG directly into our documents using the Edit HTML function?
