For Beginners: 3 Getting Started Guides

Thursday, April 23, 2009 6:11 AM

My friend Chrystina is an Operations Coordinator at a small software company in Sunnyvale, CA. A few days ago, she told me that she just started using Google Docs. As a beginner, she was trying to figure out how to collaborate with her coworkers and access her docs from both home and work. She's very busy, so she asked me if we had some guides that would give her the basics of how to get started using Google Docs.

The timing of our conversation couldn't have been more perfect. We recently finished Getting Started Guides for spreadsheets, documents, and presentations -- because using a product for the first time can sometimes be challenging.

These three guides cover the basics about Google Docs and have tidbits of information on features you may not know too much about. If you already use Google Docs spreadsheets, but aren't so familiar with presentations, you can read this guide to learn, for example, how to embed an online presentation in your blog.

Don't forget to send these links along to your family, friends, and coworkers who may want to get started with Google Docs.

After you're finished reviewing the guides, check our Help Center for more information. And if you have questions or want to share your suggestions and comments, visit our Help Forum.

The Getting Started Guides still presume a lot of knowledge with the user.

E.g. the one about spreadsheets altogether ignores 'simple' things like what are cell references like A1, ranges like A1:B4, and simple expressions like =1+2
Also ignored are issues like the difference between numbers and strings (and how to force strings by prepending a string by a single quote or formatting cells as Plain Text).
Also formatting in general is ignored, yet this is one of the most used features to get things 'looking right'.

I try to use the ImportXML function. I have about 12 on my spreadsheet, they worked fine when I inserted them but when I closed the document and reopened it, it doesn't load the xmls just writed "Loading..." on all cells, and expressions.

Spreadsheets, Docs and presentations have quite a few inconsistencies in their interface,

I've noticed average non-tech user getting confused.

For example - Docs and presentation has the button "Save and Close" on the main interface. But in spreadsheets, the option can be only accessed thru file Menu.

Another example, Docs has the option "Email as attachment" which is quite useful when sending it to third parties, who may not know or have access to Google Docs. When the intent is to merely communicate, rather than interact, emailing as a attachment works better. But spreadsheets don't have the same option. Presentation has the option, but the name is somewhat inconsistent with the one in Docs,

It would be great if Google team could sort out such small inconsistencies
