Spruce up your surveys: 70 colorful themes

Thursday, April 30, 2009 1:50 PM

We've just launched 70 themes for forms so you can add a little (or a lot of) color to your surveys and questionnaires. Some themes are basic colors schemes (like Blue, Espresso, or Rose) and others are fancier designs (like Picnic, Zen Spring, and Dusk).

How do you choose a theme? When you're editing a form, click the Theme button to find the right theme and apply it to your form. One caveat: These themes will be visible to your respondents when they fill out the form online, not within email (like Gmail).

Try them out and let us know what you think.

Update: Replaced an extra open paren with a comma and corrected the image. Oops.

This is embarrassing. Do you honestly think there are people that want to use these childish designs? Just give us the choice of simple things (like font, colour, spacing between fields etc) not this rubbish. 95% of people (and I've asked more than a few) want simple professional looking forms. It really can't be that difficult.

I wouldn't be quite as harsh as Greg, since this is a nice addition to my wife's teacher site for her 3rd grade class.

But the gist of it I agree with -- the crying, crying need for forms is some basic control over spacing. There is WAY too much space between the fields, and it is a REAL pain that you can't get the question and the answer on the same line.

First of all, I really don't think criticism is necessary here. I mean, unless you're a paying Google Apps member, this is all free. I don't think its reasonable to complain about something that's cost you nothing.

Even if you are paying, you knew full well (or should've put in the time to figure out) what it was you were buying--and it certainly wasn't fully customizable forms.

That said, I still think there's room for constructive community feedback. I'd like to add mine by suggesting Google Docs integrate some more control over the layout of forms on a webpage. I know our company would benefit from such a addition.

Thank you.

One other thing I think forms really need, even more than formatting control - field validation.

Always great to see Google moving things forward. I would echo the desire for more ability to create "professional" forms: Fonts, data validation (eg enforcing a valid date).

However - all improvements are welcome, and I still think Google Docs is utterly fantastic for the things I use it for.

Well put Andy.

True, I was harsh. Apologies if I overstepped the mark.

However, my criticisms still stand. I know it's free, but that's part of Google's marketing strategy to be the number one global brand, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be an awful lot better. The simple features it needs are oddly missing. I look forward to seeing this situation remedied ASAP.

Do I like Google Docs? Love 'em! That's why I'm so desperate for a business like solution.

This is awesome!
Can you make the theme apply to the confirmation screen as well? It seems pretty plain.

Also, please please please allow us to insert pictures/drawings into forms like you can for docs and spreadsheets!

Yeah, I have to agree with Greg.

We also need "label" for categorization, or to write special instruction to answer certain type on question.

I had a problem when i was trying to embed the themed form in my blog. These themes are cute, but if I could use my own background pic and adjust the size, it will be really awesome~!

I like, just would be great if we could create our own themes too!

I like the forms, but what I really need is to be able to add a bit of text in the middle of the form that isn't a question. Also, it would be great to have multiple scale questions in the same block... eg.

please rate the following on a scale of 1-5...

good bad
question1 1 2 3 4 5
question2 1 2 3 4 5
question3 1 2 3 4 5
question4 1 2 3 4 5

I would like to be able to add fields to the spreadsheet that don't necessarily show up on the form. The last time I tried to add a static field, the spreadsheet would go completely wonky on me when info was submitted, pushing my static fields to the end of the spreadsheet (columns).

I will also echo my support for customizable themes, the ability to adjust fields on a form (have multiple fields on one line), include field validation, and spruce up the confirmation page.

Now, having said all that, I'd also like to add THANK YOU! I think Google is awesome and I'm always pleasantly surprised by the improvements. Keep 'em coming :)

yeah, please do enable form theme editing.

The current themes are, quite frankly, horrible. It would be great to open up theme design for the community so we can submit some better themes. Would also be a nice feature to modify them if we want.

Es una herramienta muy buena. Gracias por eso.

Sería extraordinariamente mejor si pudiéramos hacer cambios en los formularios: el tipo de letra, colores, etc. o si también pudiéramos cambiar las plantillas actuales.
