Data Liberation, "Mark as viewed", and New!

Monday, October 26, 2009 1:30 PM

A couple weeks ago, we launched a multi-file uploader to make it much easier for you to put files into the cloud. Today we're launching a new feature to make it much easier to get your content out.

That's right, it's our first major offensive on the Data Liberation Front: "Convert, Zip and Download."

Select one or more files and then click on "Export" from the "More Actions" menu. Next, pick the format (e.g. PDF, Microsoft Word, etc) you want for your exported files. Finally, click "Continue" and we'll give you a nice zip file to download that has all your content.

For now, you can "export" up to 500 MB of content in a single zip file, which is over 20,000 typical files. Sometimes it takes us a few minutes to export really large amounts of files, so instead of making you wait, we added an "Email when ready" option. We'll send you a link when the zip file is ready.

We've made some other improvements to Docs as well. We've added indicators on whether you've "viewed" an item or not. "Unviewed" files are in bold, while "viewed" files are not. You can toggle this setting by selecting the item and clicking on "Mark as (Un)Viewed" in the "More Actions" menu.

We rounded out this feature with a "New!" indicator that is displayed when items are initially shared to you. So when an item is first shared to you, it will be bold ("Unviewed") and marked as "New!". Once you view this item, the item is listed normally. And, of course, when the item is updated by someone else, we mark it as "Unviewed" again.

Give the features a whirl and let us know what you think.

The New! indicator is at the wrong spot. When the file name is very long or the Name column in the Google Docs files list is very narrow, the indicator is not visible.

As there is ample space between the 'Star' and the file icon the New! indicator should be put there! (IMHO ;)

How about an API for the export? I'd prefer to be able to get at my data in automated way so that I could periodically download it without having to remember to go to the site.

@Kamil

you can use Google Documents List Data API
http://code.google.com/apis/documents

If like, you can use GDocBackup. It's an NET/Mono apps that uses Google API to backup (exports) docs.

Why make the interface even more cluttered? The whole bold and not-bold-but-light-blue thing makes it cluttered and leads to me being unable to get a good overview over my documents.

The "new" tag doesn't help either!

Please revert or give us an option to opt out of this.

You can use the Document list API, but I think it is unnecessary complicated.

It would be much simpler if you thru http://code.google.com/apis/documents/ could get out the zip-file directly without having to loop thru all documents and export them one-by-one.

Google - do you hear us ?

Sorry if this is off-topic, but when will Google fix the problem with auto-import of docs when you email them to that special writely address? For months this has been broken; although you do get an email saying it worked and a link to the doc, it's a 'zombie' doc that doesn't show up in your list of all docs. This has been going on for months! Our site www.transplanthouse.org depends on this feature for transplant patients applying for housing and it would be very nice if it could get fixed... Thanks!

I have uploaded a spreadsheet of addresses. All is well except with zip codes. Those that uploaded as a nine digit zip made the transition, but those that are five digits have translated as an "@" sign. When I type in a corrected five digit zip, it immed reverts to an "@"sign. Any idea why? And whats the fix?
