Google Docs now more consistent

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 9:30 AM

You have given us clear (and sometimes colorful!) feedback that we should improve consistency across our products. In fact, the highest-ranked idea on the recently launched Google Docs product ideas page today asks us for a "uniform interface."

Today, we're happy to let you know we've standardized the look and feel of the Google Docs editors. Check this out:

The links, title area, menus, menu terminology, and toolbar are now nearly uniform across documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

We're going to continue to converge on smooth, consistent appearance and behavior across all aspects of Google Docs, so stay tuned, and if you have suggestions, let us know on our forum and ideas page.

SUPER!!! Why aren't the saving buttons the same for spreadsheets?

Thanks for using my idea!!!

because you don't save spreadsheet.
It is like you are editing in cloud itself for spreadsheet.

Please pass along your consistency effort to the Youtube crew! I'd love to see a similar interface in Youtube for videos shared with friends/family: One screen where I can view all the videos I've uploaded, and all the videos my friends have uploaded and shared with me.

@satya

How is that different from a document or presentation?

With spreadsheets you can have several sheets. I would liked to have that option with documents too. In stead of having to open sevaral related documents that you're working on, you could just open one and have several sheets. And it would also be easier to share this document with other, since you could just add another sheet without having to share the new document (I know that you now have the option of sharing a folder, thank you very much, but I would also like to have the option to make documents with multiple sheets).

Awesome! I run a small marketing firm and we use Docs for client collaboration. Consistency between the apps should help them beat the slight learning curve even better. THANKS!

The Share button now is for all document types at the far right!
Yes, this makes the interface now nearly uniform.

Only the other changes are much to subtle to notice...

What about a chat window in docs, and the ability to transfer ownership in spreadsheets? That would mean more to me than essentiall cosmetic changes.

That is awesome, one thing I would like to see is "Save and Close" button in spreadsheets also.

+1 for the 'Save & Close' button in spreadsheets. I just don't get the logic of not having it there.

Did you also break editing in the Spreadsheet? When I try to edit an existing cell, the contents is blank now instead of showing the current value.

Google docs is having a problem... Seems that it won't load docs properly.

However, Spreadsheet and presentation seems to be working fine.

Tried on Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. Docs still not working. =(

Help!

Would be nice if such consistency were carried across all Google Apps. E.g., Gmail variously appears as Gmail, Mail, Inbox.

As is, it makes teaching/learning Google Apps more difficult, especially for senior citizens.

Also VERY difficult for seniors (and some others as well) are the extremely distorted characters that must be matched at sign-in (the ones for posting, here, seem more reasonable).

Every day I love Google Docs more.

I wish that it would adopt the same "forgot your password" set up as in the regular Gmail. If the admin password, or any user passwords are lost there is no way of resetting or getting new passwords. And there is no documentation about getting new passwords.

All links from spreadsheet disappeared.
Also the menu command Insert > Link (hyperling).

All of my old spreadsheet who had links in cells were broken.

Talking about consistency, what about using upper case for both C of close in the buttons "Save & Close"?
